Electrical Engineering Department

The Department of Electrical Engineering was established in 1985. It was functioning as supporting department to teach the electrical engineering related courses in first year and higher classes of related branches. In the year 2010-2011 the course in B.E. (Electrical Engineering) was started with an intake of 60 students. There onwards the department started functioning separately and independently. The new building is constructed for the department. The department has well qualified and experienced faculty with industrial background. The department imparts quality education to students and suffice all the needs required in modern era apart from curriculum. The department organizes regular educational and industrial visits to various generating plants and electrical machines manufacturing industries to acquaint the students with latest developments in the field. The department has Electrical Engg. Association “ELECTRICON”, a student forum which provides an active platform for students to exhibit their talent and creativity. The students are exposed to knowledge era through organizing various technical quizzes, seminars, workshops and lectures from experts. The dedication of faculty and keen interest of students are producing good academic records. The department has well equipped laboratories with state of art infrastructure.

The following laboratories help the students to acquire practical knowledge.

LABORATORIES :
Basic Electrical Engineering, Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, Electrical Measurements, Network Analysis, Electrical Engineering Workshop, Control Systems, Switchgear and Protection, High Voltage Engineering, Computer Applications in Power Systems labs as well as Computing Centre are being managed by this Department for providing adequate practical training. They are fully established with necessary equipment.

1. Basic Electrical Engineering : This is a basic lab of Electrical Engineering at first year level. This lab has state of art equipments. The major experiment in this lab are verification of Kirchhoff’s laws, transformer tests, resonance in series and parallel ac circuits and 3 phase star and delta connections. A separate kit is available to display the hysteresis loop on CRO. The students are exposed to Electrical Machines and transformers at the first year level itself. Demonstration kits are available to teach basic functioning of various meters.

2. Electrical Machines Lab : All major set ups of Electrical Machine are available to study various types of Electrical Machines. Students perform various tests to find out the efficiency and regulation of generators, alternators and speed-control of motors. Major experimental setups are 3 phase alternator, 3 phase synchronous motor, 3 phase slip ring Induction motor etc. Electrical machines demonstration kit is available to study the constructional details of machines.

3. Electrical Measurements : The students are exposed to various modern measuring techniques to measure resistance, capacitance, inductance, stress, strain etc. Well designed kits are available to study different types of `Bridge Circuits'. AC potentiometers and DC potentiometers are used to measure ac and dc unknown voltages. 3-Phase inductive load is used for measurement of 3-Phase reactive Power using one wattmeter.

4. Control System Lab : This lab has all the control setups like DC and AC position control systems units, control mechanism for positioning load at the desired position using open loop and closed loop control , synchro transmitter-receiver pair, AC and DC servo motors. A well designed unit is available to study temperature control systems. Highly sophisticated control engineering trainer is available to simulate process control with different types of plants. MATLAB package and Microprocessor based stepper motor control is available.

5. Power Electronics Lab: The lab is equipped with different Power Electronics kits to study various aspects of Power Electronics Circuits for power conversion. The major experimental setups are Cycloconverters, Commutation Circuits, Triac Circuits, Half Controlled and Fully Controlled Converter Circuits, 3-Phase Controlled Rectifier, Parallel Inverter, Series Inverter, Buck/Boost Chopper. The DC drive setup is also available to control DC Shunt Motor.

6. Network Analysis : Sufficient number of kits are available to study and verify basic network theorems like Thevenin’s, Norton’s, Maximum power transfer theorems , series and parallel resonance and a separate kit is available to display the Fourier coefficients on CRO. Various network parameters such as z-parameters, y-parameters can be measured on KITS. The students work individually on each kit.

7. Electrical Engineering Workshop : The practicals on various types of domestic and industrial electrical fittings, testing of wiring systems, transformer design and demonstration of various parts of electrical machines and distribution of power from substation are performed by students. The major experimental setups are winding machine, grounding/earthing testing etc.

8. High Voltage Engineering : The HV is the compulsory subject for VII semester students. The lab is equipped with 100KV testing transformer, horizontal sphere gap arrangement, rod gap arrangement, insulation tester kit, oil test kit, horn gap apparatus, and corona cage. The various tests on insulators can be conducted in lab. Adequate safety measures are provided in the lab.

9. Switch Gear and Protection : The Lab is equipped with relay testing kit to test different relays. differential protection of transformer unit is also available. The students are exposed to study various types of circuit breakers, fuse characteristics, CT characteristics. The lab gives the experience of different protection devices used in power systems.

10. Computer Center : The departmental computer center has 25 terminals with dual core intel processor with internet facility. These systems are provided with various softwares such as MATLAB, PSIM and Autocad. This lab enables students of final year to work on their projects.

11. EID Lab : The practicals based upon real time implementation of hardware circuitries which are used in power system and based on syllabus as well as various substations are visited to impart more practical knowledge.

12. Electrical Drawing and Simulation : In this lab the software packages for drawing and analysis of electrical systems are introduced to converse the students with latest trends in drawing, designing and analysis. Advanced softwares are used to make the students practically oriented as possible so that they are not only able to prepare the drawing but also have fair insight into the different aspects of the components of electrical systems.

13. Computer Applications in Power Systems : In this lab programming and simulation of various numerical methods in power systems, load flow analysis is done. Required facilities are available in the lab.

About Course

Our life would be unimaginable without the use of electrical energy. The growing utilization of it is a decisive prerequisite for a rapid development of industry and agriculture. The global climate change and depleting natural resources are demanding invention of energy conscious new technologies. The universality of Electrical Engineering discipline spans from theory, applications, technological development and its societal implications. Electrical Engineering has enormous and widespread impact on our daily lives. From power generation to electric vehicle charging, telecom networks to computing infrastructures, electric systems in our homes to satellite technology. All these are created, designed and operated by electrical engineers. Electrical Engineering is integrated part of each system and will remain for all the time. Hence it is the ever growing engineering branch.
