The Mechanical Engineering Department is the largest Department of the Institute both in terms of intake of students and the size of teaching staff.  Recently the Department has got accreditation by the N.B.A., A.I.C.T.E., New Delhi SECOND TIME for its consistent quality-seeking approach towards dissemination of high-level technical knowledge.  Now the Department can also ask for funds for its ongoing and future research projects from government institutions.  The total intake capacity per year of the department is 90 students.  Apart from this 15 seats are available for first class diploma holders for admission directly into the second year.  Due to the large number of students, classes are run in two sections to improve the effectiveness of teaching and for better teacher-student interaction.   At the final year, free elective scheme is introduced as per the stipulations of the Nagpur University.  Under this scheme, a student may choose one subject from each of the three groups of electives. This scheme gives wider scope for students to opt for subjects of their choice.  At present, two streams are offered viz.  Thermal Engineering and Production Engineering. A third stream-Design is likely to be introduce from the next academic year.

lLABORATORIES
The Department has well equipped laboratories workshop bays and state-of-the-art CAD./CAM centre as detailed below.
1

Machine Shop: It is primarily used by the third semester students. The final year students used it for fabrication projects & fourth semester students for fabricating mini projects.  Here the third semester students get exposure to various lathe; shaper; planer, milling & drilling operations.  The shop has well-maintained production type machine tools such as capstan (turret lathe;) All general head stock lathe machines.  Besides those: shaper; double housing planer; radial drilling machine; slotter machine; milling machine along with dividing heads; and grinding machines such as; surface grinder; tool & cutter dividing heads; and grinding machines such as; surface grinder; tool & cutter grinders are also these machines are available for precision work also.

Projects fabricated: 1. Steam engine (2.5 mm dia) 2. Vortex tube; 3) EDM 4) ECM 5) AJM 6) Automatic indexing drilling machine 7) Bricks making machine 8) Fatigue testing machine.

2

Workshop: The Workshop complex houses carpentry, fitting, smithy, foundry and welding shops with proper ventilation and illumination.  Each shop is provided with proper workbenches with all the required tools modern equipments have been added to each shop, particularly the foundry shop.  Foundry shop is facilitated with various types of sand testing equipments.  Also aluminium casting can be done

First year students of all branches are trained here in common workshop practices

3

Theory of Machines Lab: This laboratory has a good set-up for demonstrating aspects of both kinematics and dynamics of mechanism and machines. Experiments on cam mechanism Whirling of shafts, gyroscope, balancing vibrations etc.  can be performed here.  Excellent models for kinematics of machines are available for demonstration. Some models made by the staff and students are part of the Theory of Machines Laboratory.

4

Heat Transfer Lab: Almost all the experimental units on conduction, convection and radiation are available for study of students. The latest addition is an experiment on drop-wise and film-wise condensation.  Some other set-ups have been modified according to the needs.

5.

Mechanical Measurements Lab: Students learn various methods for measurement of important parameters such as temperature, pressure, strain, torque, linear and angular displacement etc. required in engineering.  Strain measurements through strain gauges are also done apart from other routine measurements. Simulators are available for study of dynamics response of I and II order systems. Transducers for sensing temperatures, pressure and speed are available. Device to measure force sound level, liquid-level and flow of fluids has been added.

6.

Metallurgy Lab: It has models of microscopes, specimen-making machines and all needed implements to study microstructure under various changes due to loading and also heat treatment.  Recent additions are the equipments for hardness testing and software based microstructure study.

7

Energy Conversion Lab: It comprises of three different laboratories viz. Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Internal combustion engines and Energy conversion. This lab has heat engines, compressor and refrigeration and air conditioning apparatus, models of boilers, steam engines, rotary engines, multistage turbines and two-strokes and four-stroke engines used in vehicles.  This has been modernized with the addition of a computerized I.C. engine test rig

8

Metrology Lab: It is equipped with measuring instruments and gauges along with surface plates, optical flats, profile projector, comparators etc.

9

CAD/CAM Lab: CAD/CAM Lab is established with a good collection of systems and assorted software. Recently the Department purchased highly demanding IDEAS software to provide hands-on training to the students.  Along with this it has advanced softwares like NISA (Numerical Integrated Software for Analysis) and Virtual Engineering Software for Engineering Drawing.  Students get ample time for working on their ideas. A CNC machine is available to demonstrate concepts of Computer Aided Manufacturing. Further plans of augmenting this lab include increasing the number of systems, procuring software for finite element analysis and pro-engineering and robotic manipulators which forms an important part of flexible manufacturing systems.

10

Research and Development Lab: This laboratory has good set up consisting variable compression ration petrol engine test rig to carry investigation of different alternative fuels. The laboratory also equipped with variable compression ratio exhaust gas analyzer to test emission level and facility to determine calorific value of volatile fuels.  Additional accessories attached to the engine to change gas mode like LPG and CNG.

Heat Transfer Lab: Almost all the experimental units on conduction, convection and radiation are available for study of students. The latest addition is an experiment on drop-wise and film-wise condensation.  Some other set-ups have been modified according to the needs.

Project Work

Final year students, normally in a group of four, are assigned project work under the guidance of one faculty member.  This work is done as solar energy, bio-gas, cryogenics, computerized solutions of mechanisms, Robotics etc., are given due stress. These projects involve both analysis and investigation loading to design solutions and also fabrication of designed components. Now, as per the revised pattern, the Nagpur University has changed creativity in designing and fabricating mini projects, generally models

Industrial Tours

To have exposure to the industrial environment, the Department organizes visits to industrial premises.  This forms a part of the curriculum for the second year as well as the final year.  It has been made compulsory for each student to undergo industrial training for a minimum of 45 days.

Seminars

It is very essential that engineers should have excellent communication skills and expertise in certain chosen fields of engineering.  To meet this objective the Department conducts seminars for the third and final year students. The student of third year deliver seminar based on their industrial training or literature collected on a certain topic, whereas the final year students do their industrial training or literature collected on a certain topic, whereas the final year students do the same as a part of their project work
